THEATRE PROGRAM DETAILS

Choose from our three Theatre Program Streams!

>>> STREAM 1: PERFORMANCE SUMMER INTENSIVE (PRE-UNDERGRADUATE LEVEL)

This program introduces high school students (15-17 years old) to the kind of training they might expect to find in a University Theatre Program. Stream 1 students will be given instruction in Improvisation Into Text, Voice, Movement, Clown, and Fight Techniques. All the instructors are trained professionals. The work will be fun, but challenging, at a level appropriate to their age.

During weekdays, students will engage in three-hour theatre workshops and two-hour creative English language classes. The end result of the coursework will be a culminating performance project. Each student will receive a compilation recording of their work in class.

Includes Embodied English Language Classes (see below)

>>> STREAM 2: PERFORMANCE SUMMER INTENSIVE (UNDERGRADUATE LEVEL)

Our undergraduate-level program is designed for university students who intend to pursue acting and performance in a professional capacity. Steam 2 students will work closely with our outstanding professionally-trained theatre instructors to refine their performance skills and to develop individual style and technique.

During weekdays, students will engage in three-hour theatre workshops and two-hour creative English language classes. The end result of the coursework will be a culminating performance project. Each student will receive a compilation recording of their work in class.

Includes Embodied English Language Classes (see below)

>>> STREAM 3: PLAYWRITING SUMMER INTENSIVE (UNDERGRADUATE & GRADUATE LEVEL)

This intensive playwriting workshop is a hands-on study in the art and craft of playwriting.  Over the course of three weeks, emerging playwrights will be led through a series of seminars, roundtables, writing exercises, and staged readings (featuring professional actors), culminating in the development of a portfolio of brand new work for the stage.

While emerging playwrights will examine the basic elements of dramatic writing, emphasis will be given to the development of the playwrights’ own work. In this way, participants will gradually acquire a set of skills and working principles based on their own writing needs and objectives, rather than adopt a prescribed "formula" for dramatic writing. All writing will be reviewed by the instructor, and analyzed in-class through a series of instructor led dramaturgical sessions. Peer-based dramaturgical feedback will also be encouraged. Additionally, participants will have a unique opportunity to work one-on-one with the instructor in order to further facilitate the realization of his or her own vision.

Special features of our programs include:

  • Work with Jean-Jacques Lemêtre (of Paris' famous Théâtre du Soleil)
  • Embodied English Language Classes
  • Collaborative salon-style cross-program gatherings where students will have the opportunity to experiment with ideas, make music, and present their week's work

EMBODIED English LANGUAGE Classes

The language component of our program uses a unique methodology developed by Toronto Laboratory Theatre called Embodied English. Embodied English involves no desks, no writing and no boring memorization. Through close observation, an analysis of numerous samples of native speakers’ verbal and non-verbal behaviour, and class improvisation, students learn the differences between the language choices and strategies that native speakers of English tend to make and their own way of using English. This new awareness allows the students to greatly improve their ability to communicate and be understood. The course also helps the learners of English to improve their pronunciation: specifically intonation and speech rhythm, both of which are aspects of pronunciation commonly ignored by other ESL programmes.
